The Bancroft Ontario Provincial Police are hoping to fill 200 chairs for its upcoming education session on fraud. The event is open to anyone living in any of the eight municipalities where the detachment provides policing services.
Sgt. Trevor Pitts emphasized the ultimate goal is education, noting the more people who understand how fraud works, the better chance they have of avoiding becoming victims. He added seniors may be the primary audience to attend, but others are also welcome.
“It’s also if you have senior parents, but they can’t make it, and you want to go and learn how to help them and take the information back. Please come. This is not limited to seniors.”
He added it’s not if someone will be targeted, but when.
“We want to give people strategies and education so when you get that text message, email, or phone call, whatever it might be, we want the hair on the back of our neck to stand up.”
A detective constable from the OPP’s Toronto Fraud Division will be in attendance and light refreshments will be served.
Two sessions are being held at the Dungannon Recreation Centre in L’Amable on Tuesday, Oct.7, one at 2 p.m. and the other at 6:30 p.m. There are 100 seats available and registration is available on Eventbrite by clicking a link on the Town of Bancroft’s Facebook page.
Bancroft Community Transportation is offering free rides for participants. Anyone interested is asked to reach out to the organization directly to book.
