Negotiations between colleges and striking faculty break down

There have been developments in the strike affecting 24 Ontario colleges, including Loyalist.

Earlier today, negotiations between the colleges and striking faculty broke down. The council representing Ontario’s colleges has called on the Ontario Labour Relations Board to schedule a forced-vote on its latest offer. It could take up to 10 days to organize that vote, and the council is calling for the strike to be suspended during that time.

Loyalist College’s President and CEO Ann Marie Vaughan says suspending the strike would allow faculty and students, who have already lost three weeks of instruction, to return to class. Vaughan says this is the only position colleges believe they have left, but hopes a settlement will be reached soon.

College faculty has been on strike since October 16th. Classes at the Bancroft Campus of Loyalist College have been suspended during that time, while Community Employment Services has stayed open. Loyalist College says it has plans to make sure students get their semester.
