NHCS to address impact of minimum wage hike on child care

Rates at North Hastings Children’s Services could be going up as a result of the province’s minimum wage increase.

At the beginning year, Ontario’s minimum wage rose to $14-an-hour. Next year, it will go up to $15. Executive Director Jessica Anderson says this is going to cost NHCS a lot of money to pay its frontline workers and supervisors.

Anderson says an information session has been scheduled for tomorrow night, to let parents and caregivers know about how the wage increase will affect local child care rates.

The information session will run from 5:30pm to 6:30pm on Wednesday. Free child minding and food will be available. In case of bad weather, Thursday has been set up as the back-up date.

Surveys will also be handed out to parents to get feedback on the issue. Anderson says new child care rates won’t be set until the NHCS board has a chance to look at the results. She says NHCS will work to continue to maintain high quality care at an affordable rate.
