Police warn of scammers pretending to be with the CRA

Haliburton Highlands OPP wants you to be on the lookout for anyone claiming to be with the Canada Revenue Agency.

This comes after recent reports from residents about being phoned or emailed by scammers impersonating CRA representatives.

Police say the scammers will be aggressive and persistent, and demand that you pay ‘back taxes’ immediately through a money service or by using a pre-paid debit or credit card. They might also be looking for personal information. The scammers will then tell you that you’ll be fined or arrested if you don’t pay up.

But, the OPP is reminding you not to take immediate action if this happens. Check that what you’re being told is true by getting in touch with the CRA using a phone number you find. Police also recommend asking yourself why the CRA would be contacting you by phone or by email for information they should already have on file.

If you have been the victim of fraud, you should get in touch with your local police department.
