Bancroft shares voting guidelines ahead of election

Voting is more than a democratic right, it’s also the easiest way to have a say in how your community is governed.

That’s the message from the town of Bancroft, which comes just months before this year’s municipal election. The town says, when you cast your ballot, you’ll be voting for candidates to represent you on council and on both local school boards. There will be one Mayor. The Bancroft and Dungannon wards will each get three councillors.

CAO Hazel Lambe says council has chosen to stick with mail-in-ballots for this year’s election to make it easier for residents.

She says council was also concerned about the security and accessibility of online or telephone ballots. Lambe also says, once ballots are sent out, you will be able to vote.

Town staff will also be able to accept all votes that are dropped off at the municipal office. The town says, in order to vote, you have to be a Canadian citizen, at least 18 years old, a Bancroft resident or tenant, or married to a Bancroft property owner.

For anyone looking to run, they will have to submit nominations papers to the town in person or through an agent between May 1st and July 27th. They’ll need to provide a statement of qualifications and proof of support from at least 25 voters. They also need to pay a $200 fee to run for mayor, and $100 if they want to be a town councillor.

More updates will be posted on the town’s website as they become available.
