Mandatory certification for firefighters could cost Highlands East up to $70,000.
Acting Fire Chief Chris Baughman presented the information to council on Wednesday. The proposed provincial changes call for new recruits to be certified as early as next year. Those currently on the roster would have to be certified in 2020.
Mayor Dave Burton says rural communities can’t absorb that kind of cost.
Fire Chief Baughman is asking the province to extend the certification deadline. Click here see Baughman’s full report.
