OPP: Watch out for scammers trying to sell you services

Bancroft and Central Hastings OPP want you to watch out for construction, paving, and home repair scams.

As the weather heats up, police say you could be approached by fraudsters offering to work on your home. But it’s important to make sure you are dealing with a legitimate business.

Constable Lisa Robson says if the salesperson is pushy or tries to rush the sale, they could be a scammer. Robson says it’s important to think about the services you’re being offered before paying or signing a contract.

If you are considering hiring a company to do some work around your home, Robson recommends that you do some research.

Robson says, if you’re unsure about the salesperson, ask them to come back and get a phone number. You can then talk to your friends about whether or not you need the work done, and how much it should cost. If you feel like the salesperson is trying to pressure or intimidate you, ask them to leave. You can then report it to police.

The OPP also reminds you that new provincial laws have banned some forms of door-to-door sales; air cleaners, air conditioners, air purifiers, duct cleaning services, furnaces, water filters, water heaters, water purifiers, water softeners, and water treatment devices.
