A local club is sliding into a special season.
The Bancroft Curling Club is marking its 65th year. The exact birthday of the club being incorporated is Nov. 15, 1957.
As its leaders celebrate the milestone, they hope to gain new members, especially because COVID-19 slowed activities at the Newkirk Boulevard rink the past two years.
Past president Jeff Snyder explains why curling rocks.
“In a small, relatively rural community like Bancroft, people look for opportunities to get together, to exercise and socialize,” he says. “The curling club is the perfect place to do that. You can get exercise curling on the rink and then socialize after at the clubhouse.”
Club members are also spreading the word that curling is inclusive.
Snyder says the club has about an equal number of men and women. And the game has changed in ways to make it accessible to people of any age or ability level.
“With the advent recently of what’s called stick delivery, anyone can play the game,” he says. “We do have some members as old as their late 70s and early 80s who are still enjoying the game. And we have young members starting off, at five, six and seven years old.”
