Mitten tree is warming hands, and hearts, at Hastings Highlands Public Library

Here’s a story to warm your heart – or your hands – this holiday season. A mitten tree has been set up at Hastings Highlands Public Library.

It’s like a Christmas tree, but it’s decorated with mittens that any person can help themselves to, if they need them. And people can donate mittens to the tree, too.

Library CEO Wendy Keating says the idea was brought to them by a visitor who knits mittens and likes to give them out. It seemed like a great idea, for a place that really is a hub of social activity.

“The library in Hastings Highlands, in downtown Maynooth, is the community centre at the moment,” she says. “It is the living room of the community.”

Keating says the mitten tree is already being used and staff will likely keep it up beyond the holidays.
