NHHS’s Northern Outdoor Studies program holding fundraising raffle

A high school program that provides education fitting for the environment we live in needs support this winter.

North Hastings High School’s Northern Outdoor Studies program is selling tickets for a fundraising raffle. The draw takes place on Jan. 19 and there’s $6,000 worth of prizes up for grabs.

The program teaches Grade 11 and 12 students several skills to prepare for careers in the north, including “bear awareness” and “chainsaw safety training.” They study search and rescue, winter survival and geocaching, among other interesting topics that are fitting for teenagers living in rural communities.

Its teacher, James Burbidge, says costs to run the program are higher than a traditional class so the raffle proceeds offset that costs.

Tickets, for $5, can be purchased at the school’s main office, Eagle’s Nest Power Equipment and Cunningham’s Country Store.
