Hilly Hundred spins into North Hastings Saturday

Nearly 200 cyclists will be challenging themselves on our region’s rugged hills this weekend.

The Hilly Hundred is set to go on Saturday, Sept. 30. Organizers Greg Coopers say it’s one of the toughest cycling events in Ontario.

There are three different courses, which travel different routes throughout North Hastings. Each one starts and finishes at North Hastings High School.

The 130-km Ed’s Big Gravel ride and the 80-km Kim’s Sensible Gravel ride start at 8:30 a.m. And the 104-kilometre Hilly Canadian Century Road race pulls out at 9 a.m.

Cooper says most riders return to town to approach the finish line at around noon and spectators can cheer them on. Roads will still be open to traffic through the day and cyclists must abide by the rules of the road as they race.

Cooper says that, each year, proceeds from the race support a charity. This year’s charity has yet to be determined. Last year’s proceeds were donated to purchase sports equipment for North Hastings High School.
