Veterans’ banners back up, ahead of Remembrance Day

A relatively new tradition continues in Bancroft this Remembrance Day season; veterans from our region will get some public recognition, in view of drivers and walkers who travel downtown streets.

Records of their commitment to the Canadian Forces are up and on banners that are hanging on street poles.

The banners are the products of a project between the North Hastings Heritage Museum, the Bancroft BIA and the Royal Canadian Legion 181. It started seven years ago.

The Museum’s Mary Kavanagh says the banners were put up ahead of Thanksgiving weekend so people returning home for the holiday can see them.

Kavanagh says each year there are new orders for banners commemorating veterans with local ties who have served. That, she says, speaks to the success of the program.

Six new banners were added to the collection this year, meaning there’s now about 60 around town.

“It’s so easy to forget the contributions that people have made,” she says. “So, I think [the banner project] is extremely important.”

She also says the feedback she receives from the public is “extraordinarily positive.”
