Grade 4-6 students from the area gathered on Monday for the annual elementary school track and field day.

Events included running categories like the 100m and 200m dash, up to 1500m runs, as well as shot put, triple jump and long jump.

Events were run in three age categories: The Grade 4 “Mosquitos”, Grade 5 “Atoms” and Grade 6 “Pee-wees”.

Moose FM spoke with some Coe Hill students about what their favorite events were to compete in.

“100m and 400m” said one, “Triple jump, 200m and 1500m.” said others.

Students went on to explain why they chose the distance categories:

“I prefer long runs. It’s just easier for me,” said one runner, “You don’t have to sprint the entire time.”

Another suggested it’s easier competition in the 1500m because “everyone just tries to book it at the start.”

(After being interviewed Coe Hill students asked MooseFM not to release their quote until after Monday’s meet was over, in order not to give away their strategy.)

According to Maynooth track coach Marissa Boyd, the top-placing students will continue in competition.

“They’ll go to district, which is down in Belleville at the Marion Sills track. First or second place, then they get to move on.”

Convener for the day, York River teacher Ashley Tait, said it was great to have everyone out again,

“(We’re) excited to have everyone back in action after all of the COVID sports being cancelled. And yeah, it’s just a great day to have some fun.”
