“It rattled the windows”: Explosion on Paudash School Road

The explosion of a gas cyclinder on Paudash School Road late yesterday afternoon shook nearby houses and had many residents concerned, wondering what had happened.

On June 18, shortly after 4:30 p.m., Bancroft OPP responded to the report of a loud explosion in the Township of Faraday.

OPP confirmed a gas cylinder had exploded.

Fire chief Brian Sears told Moose FM the contents of the exploded cylinder, which is about the size of a 100 pound propane tank, have not been confirmed.

Sears says when the tank exploded, it flew about 75 feet and was stopped when it hit a truck parked on the property.

According to Sears, there was no fire involved in, or as a result of the explosion which caused the tank to go flying.

There is a remaining cylinder on the property which does not appear to pose any threat but has been encapsulated out of caution.

Many residents in the area reported feeling the impact of the explosion.

Lisa, a tenant at the property, and her friend, say they were having a coffee when it happened.

“All of a sudden we heard this explosion. I mean, it literally rattled the windows. It went off and I came outside. We didn’t see any smoke. Nothing.”

The lack of any immediately noticeable evidence had many wondering at first what had happened.

“Neighbours are all out. They all want to know what’s going on. We have no clue. We had neighbours from the cross road and Jackson Road come by to see if we knew what was going on”

According to Fire Chief Sears, the Faraday Fire Department was instructed to close off Highway 28 while an investigation took place as it was close to the site of the explosion. The highway remained closed for a couple of hours.

The explosion is still being investigated by fire services. No injuries were reported.
