Monica Lumley-Peircey from the cupboard says that help is needed now more than ever, citing a massive increase in foodbank use since 2019.
“Food bank usage has increased by 90 per cent. We’ve got more and more seniors whose pensions will no longer feed them, and we’ve got working families who are showing up and are just like, ‘I don’t know what to do, I just can’t afford to eat anymore’, which is why we have a Thursday evening shift from 4-7, which is always for those who are working but still need food.”
Moose FM will be live at No Frills from 8 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. and from 12 p.m. until 3 p.m. at Foodland.
Lumley-Peircey says that there will be foodbank teams at both grocery stores all day accepting monetary and food donations and she went on to share some much-needed items on the foodbanks ‘wish list’.
“Canned hams, canned fruits canned veggies, cranberries, stuffing mix, gravy, pancake mixes, syrup. It’s nice to have a pancake breakfast for the holidays, cake and cookie mixes, festive treats, but also things like, you know, deodorant, shampoo and conditioner, toothpaste, toothbrushes”
Those who want to donate to the foodbank online can do so by going to the North Hastings Community Cupboard website and donating through Canada Helps.
