“Nobody calls a tow truck because they’re having a good day-to prey on that is wrong”: Tow truck scam reported in Bancroft

Bancroft OPP has received multiple fraud reports from people being scammed when they call a supposedly local number found online for a tow truck.

OPP say that people have pre-paid extremely high prices by credit card over the phone. Then, either no tow truck shows up, or a real local company arrives.

The local operators are either paid a small percentage by the initial company or they have to charge for services they provide.

We spoke with Kevin Newman a driver for Tow All Inc. (formerly Brinklows).

Newman has encountered multiple people who have dealt with the fraudulent company.

He says people are being massively overcharged for services, giving the example of a service that should only have cost $80 charged at $300.

“So what they’re doing is they’re taking their credit cards, when people are already stressed and upset because they know its going to be expensive. And then when they (customers) see a double charge, I don’t know if they just figure its the cost, I don’t know. But yes, there have been people who have told me they’ve been double charged… Nobody calls a tow truck because they’re having a good day. And for people to prey on that, that’s wrong.”

Newman explained how people are being taken in by the company at their most vulnerable,

“They (the fraudsters) have spoofed or somehow managed to get a previous tow company’s cell phone number and address. So it looks like it’s a Bancroft company, but it is not. My suggestion is to call the dealership or a garage and ask them to recommend a tow company. Or worst case, call OPP and say listen, who’s the tow company that you would recommend?”

Newman says he feels for the people who have been targeted and is helping how he can.

“Many people are very upset, really surprised that a tow truck has showed up.They feel scammed and very uneasy. And I either perform the service free or, you know, as much of a discount rate as I can.”

Newman says he has been in contact with OPP who are working diligently on tracking down the fraudulent company.

If you are in the Bancroft area, or anywhere, OPP say to know your rights.

They say to check out this list below, but also to make special note of the requirement for an itemized invoice BEFORE you pay.
