OPP say there is no threat to the public following kidnapping in Bancroft

There is no further risk to public safety after OPP said a Bancroft resident was kidnapped against their will.
The resident was taken to Ottawa last September and forced to withdraw a large amount of cash from several bank branches, police said.
The resident was then driven back to Bancroft and dropped off unharmed.
Daniel Cook, Bancroft OPP Media Relations Officer, said the victim was targeted.

“Although we can only release limited information as this case is still before the courts, I do want to reiterate and emphasize to the public that the victim and suspect did know each other. As a result of the investigation, the OPP determined that this was a targeted incident and there is no risk to public safety.”

After a lengthy investigation by the Bancroft OPP Crime Unit, an arrest warrant was issued for an Ottawa resident.

On Tuesday, the wanted individual was located and arrested during a routine traffic stop by Upper Ottawa Valley OPP officers.

A 22-year-old is charged with kidnapping, robbery and extortion using a firearm, forcible confinement, assault with a weapon, uttering death threats or threats of bodily harm and possession of stolen property over $5,000.

The accused was remanded in custody following a bail hearing on Wednesday.
