Tariffs likely to bring more hardship to already struggling industry says Bancroft-Minden Forest Company

Recently announced tariffs on Canadian exports will put pressure on the already struggling logging industry says Svetlana Zeran, general manager, of the Bancroft Minden Forest company.

The company oversees crown land forest management and represents logging shareholders in the region.

She noted the tariffs are a hard hit on an industry already struggling after the majority of Ontario pulp mills were recently closed.

“They were all closed in the period of about 18 months in the recent past. So not having that outlet for low grade materials is already causing hardship to our sawmills. So these tariffs will just be another nail in the coffin and I anticipate it will create a lot of additional economic hardship in the days ahead.”

MooseFM has been reaching out to local logging companies, finding not everyone will be directly affected, while others don’t know for sure at this point what the fallout of the tariffs could be.

Lebel Cambium (formerly Jan Woodlands) says 90 per cent of their lumber products are shipped within Canada.

The Bancroft Minden Forest Company holds the Sustainable Forest Licence for approximately 250,000 hectares of managed Crown Forest.

It is a partnership of 22 independent milling and harvesting companies, with a mission to “enhance value by providing high quality, timely, and cost-effective forest management services in support of our shareholders’ Crown land operations.”
