One year in, Bancroft’s CT scanner is a ‘game changer’

More than 3,000 scans have been performed in the past year since the new Computed Tomography (CT) scanner arrived at the Bancroft Hospital.

Kim Bishop chaired the Back the Cat campaign that fundraised more than $3 million dollars needed to purchase and install the scanner at the hospital.

Bishop said it has “most definitely’ saved lives.”

“Especially the people that are sent from the emergency department because it’s 24/7. So if there’s a need to have a CT scan, the staff is on call during the night to come in and do that. Because they’re cross trained, it works with X-ray as well….We knew right away we had saved lives, just being able to transport an emergency patient to the right place for the right care by having this diagnostic tool on site.

“So, it’s a game changer for us.”

Bishop said the team at the hospital appreciate the benefits.

“Our diagnostic team at the hospital took the extra training and the extra responsibility to be able to use this equipment and to be able to treat their patients and, from all accounts, they appreciated being able to augment their training.. and treating the patients to the best care that they can as close to home as possible.”

In the past year 3,362 scans have been performed overall, including 1,149 emergency scans, 2,106 outpatient scans and 107 inpatient scans.

Bishop says fundraising work for the hospital is ongoing.

The next big capital project will raise funds for a new X-ray machine for Bancroft hospital.
