Police are calling the number of motorcyclist deaths on Ontario Provincial Police patrolled roads last year ‘shocking’.
This statement comes at the start of Motorcycle Safety Awareness Week in Ontario.
OPP say there were 57 deaths in 2024, the highest number of fatalities in two decades, and according to OPP many were not the fault of the motorcyclist.
Bancroft OPP Sgt. Trevor Pitts says Safety Week, which began yesterday, serves as a reminder of how vulnerable motorcycles can be while out travelling.
He adds our area is particularly popular with motorcyclists.
“Ontario actually ranked second in Canada back in 2022…there was 240,000 new registrations with motorcycles… This is a big tourist area so we just want to make sure people are safe.”
Motorcycle safety week runs until May 7.
