Kolton Stewart, originally from Bancroft, has brought home a silver medal from the Skills Ontario competition, one of Canada’s largest skilled trades showcases.
Stewart, now a student at Sudbury’s Cambrian College, won silver in the Powerline Technician category, alongside teammate Bryson Smith of Sudbury.
The pair competed as part of Team/Équipe Sudbury — Powered by Manitoulin Transport —, at the competition held in Toronto earlier this week.
Cambrian College Communications Manager Daniel Lessard says the duo are enrolled in the popular Power Line program at the college.
“[In the program] they are trained on how to work on hydro poles, so they could end up in a utility or with a railway company,” said Lessard. “It’s a very in-demand program, and we were the first college in Ontario to offer it.”
Stewart and Smith were among 160 students and teachers from Cambrian College and local school boards representing the Sudbury region.
The annual competition features more than 2,400 students from across Ontario competing in trades ranging from carpentry to culinary arts.
In total, Team Sudbury earned 16 medals: three gold, six silver and seven bronze. The team also secured the Award of Excellence for the top-ranking college competitor.
Cambrian has competed at Skills Ontario since 2005 and now boasts a total of 77 medals — including 27 gold, 22 silver and 28 bronze.
