Multiple impaired charges laid in separate canoeing, ATV and driving incidents

Multiple impaired driving charges have been laid in the region in the last week.

Most recently, two individuals are facing impaired operation charges following separate incidents involving a canoe and an all-terrain vehicle in the region.

On Tuesday morning, Bancroft OPP responded to a disturbance in the Municipality of Highlands East. While officers were on scene, a person arrived on an ATV. An initial screening was done and the driver was taken to the detachment for further testing.

The individual was charged with operating a vehicle while impaired, their driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days and the vehicle impounded for seven.

In an unrelated incident, police were called to Golden Lake in North Algona-Wilberforce Township on Saturday night after a canoeist was reported in distress. The canoe capsized in high winds, and the person, who was not wearing a life jacket, made it to shore.

The individual was taken to hospital for assessment. As a result of the investigation, charges were laid for impaired operation of a vessel and failing to have a required flotation device on board. A 90-day licence suspension was also issued.

Both parties are scheduled to appear in court in June.

Police remind the public that it is illegal to operate any form of conveyance — including vehicles, vessels, aircraft and railway equipment — while impaired. This includes non-motorized watercraft such as canoes and kayaks.

May Long weekend:

Two drivers are facing impaired charges in Bancroft following two separate incidents over the long weekend.

Bancroft OPP say the first incident happened just after two a.m. Friday, when officers responded to a collision on Musclow-Greenview Road in Hastings Highlands.

Then, just after midnight on Saturday, officers conducting a RIDE program on Monck Street stopped a vehicle and brought the driver in for further testing.

Both drivers were charged with impaired operation, had their licences suspended for 90 days and their vehicles impounded for seven.

There were no injuries reported.
