Bancroft in talks with province over dam risks, seeks funding for repairs

Bancroft Fire Chief Pat Hoover says the Town is making progress in addressing long-standing concerns about the Bancroft Dam, following what he called a “productive” meeting with provincial officials.

Hoover told council on June 3 that he recently met with representatives from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) to discuss risks and challenges related to the aging infrastructure.

“We were able to work through a process of what the risks and the challenges are and we were able to come to a consensus that this problem is not going to go away,” Hoover said. “We need to move forward. We need to come up with solutions.”

The Fire Chief noted that this latest meeting marked a turning point in ongoing discussions. “It’s a step in the right direction,” he said.

In the meantime, the Town is preparing a grant application under the Health and Safety Water Stream to fund necessary repairs to the dam.

A decision on that funding is still pending.
