A Lake St. Peter man is finding himself $10 million richer today.

Barry Combdon, a retired electrician, was the winner of the August 3^rd Lotto Max grand prize. Combdon says he went to check his ticket and was shocked when the machine froze and OLG called. The married father of one says with his winnings he plans on buying new cars, investing and sharing with his family. Combdon says after a lifetime of hard work in his family, winning the grand prize will certainly make life easier.

The winning ticket was sold at the Linkie’s General Store on Highway 127 in Lake St. Peter.

A trio of spots in Algonquin Park have been re-opened to visitors.

That’s according to Algonquin Park, which announced Monday morning that Bissett Creek Road, Bissett Ranger Cabin and Lost Coin Ranger Cabin have all opened after being closed because of nearby wildfires.

However, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry says that three forest fires that have been burning since July near the sites are now under control. With these areas now open, all sites that were closed because of wildfires have since re-opened.

If you need to go to the Bancroft OPP detachment Sunday, don’t go in the morning.

That’s because the detachment has a planned power outage on Sunday morning between 8:30am and 12:30pm and will be closed as a result.

However, Constable Phillipe Regamey says policing services and officers will still be attending calls like any other day. 911 calls will still be received as well so officers can respond.

If you’re new to the area and have kids going to school this September, make sure they’re registered to do so.

That’s the message from the Hastings Prince Edward District School Board, which says registration dates could be different if your child is in elementary or secondary school.

If your child is between Junior Kindergarten and Grade Eight, you can register them the week of August 27^th. If your child is in high school, the registration date varies by school. For North Hastings High School, new students can be registered from 9:00am to 3:00pm on August 28^th and 29^th.

When bringing your student to register for school, you must bring a birth certificate or passport as proof of their birthday, an immunization card and information about where the child is living.

The first day of school for the 2018-2019 HPEDSB school year is September 4^th, you can find out more about registration here.

Come October, a new name will appear on your ballot when you go to vote for Ward 2 Councillor.

For the first time, Bill Wellwood is running for council in Bancroft. Wellwood moved to the area in the 1980s and is semi-retired, while doing some work at the local brewery.

Wellwood says at first he didn’t think he was going to run for council, but after seeing a lack of registered candidates he changed his mind.

Wellwood says he feels Bancroft needs more young people getting involved around the community.

For Ward 2, Charles Mullett and Barry McGibbon have already been acclaimed, while Wellwood will run alongside Valerie Miles and George Eastman for the final spot in the ward.

Come September, municipal candidates in Hastings Highlands will have a chance to meet with one another as well as voters.

Steve Barker, Chair of the All Candidates Meeting Committee, says this is important so residents can stay informed heading towards October’s election.

While the debate will be useful for residents before they head to the polls, Barker says it’ll be just as helpful for candidates.

Upper Ottawa Valley OPP wants you to be on the lookout for a new phone scam in the area.

According to OPP Constable Shawn Peever, the new scam sees people being called and told they are the subject of a law-suit. Peever says you should always verify who you’re talking to on the phone, and know the signs of a scammer.

Peever also says if you’re the subject of a fraud, you should call police.

When in doubt, Peever says the easiest way to avoid a phone scam is to just hang up and end the call. You can also call the Canadian Anti-Fraud Agency in North Bay at 1-888-495-8501.

After nearly seven months of waiting, the Brudenell, Lyndoch and Raglan Fire Department has its new truck.

The truck was unveiled Wednesday night by Fire Chief Jordan Genrick, who says the truck can hold nearly twice as much water.

Money for the truck was raised by fundraisers at community events, as well as budgeted for by the fire department through reserves each year. Genrick says the community rallied around the truck to make it possible.

The truck is a 2019 Freightliner that was originally scheduled to be delivered in early fall, but Genrick says the BLR Fire Department was thrilled to get it even earlier.
