Upcoming National Non-Smoking Week hopes to help people kick butt

If your New Year’s resolution is to quit smoking, Hastings and Prince Edward Public Health is prepared to help you.

The unit is marking the week of January 16 to 20 as National Non Smoking Week and it has several programs to help people kick the butt.

You can access HPEPH’s “We Can Quit” and “STOP Addictions” programs by calling 1-800-267-2803, ext. 600, or 613-966-5500, ext. 600.

Free nicotine patches, gum and lozenges are available for those eligible.

Public Health says that quitting the habit takes practice, so it’s important to keep practicing. Staff say it may take between seven and 30 attempts to break the cycle of addiction and perseverance can pay off in the end.

Also, those who hope to quit smoking can call trained quit specialists from Telehealth Ontario at 1-866-797-0000.

More information on resources is available through HPEPH’s Tobacco Talk Line at 613-966-5500, ext. 600 or by visiting Hastings & Prince Edward Public Health’s website.
