Ensemble cast shines in Bad Hats Theatre’s Alice in Wonderland

Bad Hats Theatre’s production of Alice in Wonderland opened last week at Bancroft’s Village Playhouse.

Much like the show’s engaging script and scoring, this musical take on Alice in Wonderland celebrates the abstract, and following your curiosity wherever it may lead, at any age.

Just ahead of opening night, Moose FM caught up with Victor Pokinko, Bad Hats’ executive producer.

Pokinko also composed the music for the show, along with singer-songwriter Landon Doak.

“It was sort of a symbiotic process,” said Pokinko. “Landon’s more of a lyricist. I’m more of a melodist. I have a classical background; Landon’s more singer-songwriter. And our styles sort of clashed in this eclectic, wonderful musical that became Alice in Wonderland.

“I think that it’s a really amazing thing to find that combination — that creative partner you can really jam with and bounce ideas off. That kind of confluence is what makes it so special.”

Innovation shines throughout Alice. While set pieces, props and costumes are relatively minimalist, clever staging and a stellar ensemble cast — many of whom also play instruments — keep audiences of all ages thoroughly engaged through the shows 90‑minute run time.

Alice runs until Sunday, July 20. Tickets range from $25.50 to $39.50, plus HST.
