Flower vandalism in Maynooth not an isolated incident

Hastings Highlands volunteers who recently gathered to plant flowers along the main street of Maynooth were disappointed to see some of them torn out of flower beds in a recent act of vandalism.

Tracy Hagar, a Hastings Highlands councilor and one of the community members who looks after the flowers, says this kind of vandalism takes a toll on everyone.

“When something like this happens in a municipality, it costs money. It costs you money, it costs me money…our tax dollars pay to put these flowers in. So every time somebody destroys them, it’s costing us.” says Hagar.

Wayne Beker from the Highway Garden Centre who often supplies flowers to the municipalities, says unfortunately Maynooth is not an exception.

“The Highway Garden Centre supplies flowers for various towns in the municipality, and three of the towns have all talked about vandalism to window boxes ..on their bridges, specifically. It gets to the point where they’ve stopped putting up flowers altogether, because they’re stolen or dropped into the river.”

According to Beker, both Bancroft and Coe Hill have had similar issues with flowers being vandalized over the past few years.
