UPDATED – Power outages reported across region after fierce storm

Power has been restored to the town of Bancroft as hydro crews continue to work on outages in the area.

Severe weather from Thursday’s storm has impacted the area with thousands of residents without power this morning.

Hydro One is reporting four outages in the area impacting about 18,000 customers.

Estimated restoration time is anywhere from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday.

Bancroft Mayor Paul Jenkins said the entire town is without power and cellular service is also being affected but overall, the town wasn’t hit overly hard.

“A couple trees down here and there but as far as actual damage, no. I’m in front of a downed tree that’s partially across the road right here. There was a tonne of wind but not a lot of rain.”

Jenkins is also asking for residents without power to let hydro crews do their jobs.

“Be patient. Hydro’s doing the best they can. Boy, they’ve had a lot of work this year with many wind events already. They do their best and it’s a dangerous job. Let’s all be patient and give them thanks.”

Town staff have been out and about since last night ensuring area roads are safe to travel and General Manager Andra Kaufeldt is asking people to be vigilant.

“We encourage everyone to check on their neighbours and loved ones. If you do come across a downed power line, contact Hydro One to report it, and stay away from it.

“Be safe in these unpredictable weather events. We thank you for your patience as we work though this storm together.”
