Yarn bomb turtles returning to Bancroft after eight years

The yarn bomb turtles are making a return to Bancroft.

Think Turtle Conservation Initiative Managing Director Kelly Wallace said back in 2018, they partnered with local knitting and crochet group Knitervention to create hundreds of yarn turtles.

The turtles were displayed all around town on signs, trees and benches and Wallace said they drew a lot of attention.

They were meant to raise awareness about turtles crossing roads during nesting season around Victoria Day weekend.

“May 2-4 is when people start opening cottages and there’s just going to be increased traffic on the roads. And also, unfortunately, that’s exactly when the turtles start moving, so you’ve got the two, and of course they’re going to be crossing roads,” she said.

Wallace said following last year’s fire at Vintage on Hastings, which supports Hospice North Hastings, staff rediscovered a box of the old yarn turtles while cleaning and reorganizing the store.

Wallace said Vintage on Hastings donated the yarn turtles back to Think Turtle, and she decided they could sell them and split the proceeds between turtle conservation and the hospice.

This Victoria Day weekend, the turtles will be for sale for $5 each at the first Bancroft Farmer’s Market of the season on May 16.
