Bridge in Madoc dedicated to constable who died 100 years ago

A bridge in Madoc has been dedicated to the memory of a constable who died in the line of duty almost 100 years ago.

The OPP and community members gathered Thursday for a dedication ceremony honouring Charles W. St. Charles, who was shot in the line of duty on November 15, 1926.

The OPP say St. Charles served with the Madoc Police for 25 years, and acted as a bailiff, town constable and county constable.

On the day he was shot, he was executing a warrant in his capacity as bailiff.

He succumbed to his injuries on December 22, 1926, and was survived by his wife and two children.

The bridge dedicated to his memory is located at highway 62 and Kellers Bridge Road.

OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique says it serves as a symbol of their lasting gratitude for his service.

Bridges across Ontario have been named after fallen officers as an act of remembrance.
