Owners can learn how to protect properties during fire season

Hastings Highlands Interlake is hosting a Wildfire Community Preparedness Day.

Environment coordinator for the Lake St. Peter Property Owners Association Bonny McCleery Scanlan said wildfires are top-of-mind for local property owner associations for the last couple of years.

The Interlake includes both official and unofficial associations from across Hastings Highlands.

Though Wildfire Community Preparedness Day is usually observed in May, McCleery Scanlan said they wanted to host Ken Cox from the Ministry of Natural Resources as a guest speaker, and his availability led them to plan the event for Saturday at Emond Hall, Hastings Highlands Municipal Building, from 9 a.m. to noon.

McCleery Scanlan has watched Cox’s presentations, and he highlights how embers from large wildfires can travel and ignite fires elsewhere.

They will review steps people can take to protect their properties during wildfire season.

McCleery Scanlan said the library and the local fire department will host activities for kids, including a “touch a truck.”
