Council asked to turn off a sign outside the Hastings Highlands Centre overnight

Hastings Highlands Council is being asked to turn off the LED sign outside the Hastings Highlands Centre at night.

Owner of the Arlington Hotel and Pub Ro Munich is asking that the sign be turned off between 10:00pm and 7:00am. Munich says he is concerned having the sign on all night is affecting his business as light is seeping into rooms at the hotel.

The sign is operated by Hospice North Hastings, which charges for some advertisements, although it does allow some non-profit organizations and the municipality to advertise for free. Councillor Alex Walder says most ads on the sign promote Bancroft instead of Hastings Highlands.

Mayor Vivian Bloom is unsure how much the municipality pays to operate the sign, and says setting a timer has been looked into. The municipality will look into the issue.
