Hastings Highlands looks into mapping turtle hot spots

A project to identify and map turtle hot spots is moving up to Hastings Highlands.

The Hastings Highlands Grant Committee had put out a call to residents to put forward ideas about projects the municipality should apply for funding for. L’Amable resident Kelly Wallace, who has been working to map turtle hot spots in the Bancroft area, says she put forward the same idea for Hastings Highlands.

Wallace says she was surprised the committee jumped on the idea. But now she needs help from Hastings Highlands residents. Wallace says she is looking for input on turtle hot spots in the municipality, so they can be mapped and identified as well.

Wallace says she hopes turtle awareness signs will be put up in the region by next spring, just in time for turtle nesting season.

Hastings Highlands, Bancroft, and L’Amable residents can let Wallace know about turtle hot spots in the area by emailing her at [email protected]. Hastings Highlands is also accepting information about these hot spots. You can e-mail the municipality at [email protected] or by sending a letter to: Municipality of Hastings Highlands, 33011 Highway 62, PO Box 130, Maynooth, Ontario, K0L 2S0.
