Local union representative addresses factors he believes are behind the college strike

The president of the union representing Loyalist College’s faculty says there are three main factors driving the current strike.

Loyalist, along with all other public colleges in Ontario, has been on strike since Monday as the union representing full-time and partial-load faculty was unable to reach an agreement with management.

President of Local 420 Eric Bauer says the first of three factors driving the strike is that faculty wants to have a say in the management’s academic decision making process.

Bauer says another reason behind the strike is that there should be a better ratio of full and part-time teachers.

He says the last of the issues the union wants to see addressed is making sure that all faculty members are paid based on the work they put in.

Bauer says the union currently has no idea how long the strike will last, but adds faculty does want to get back into the classroom as soon as possible.
