Hastings Highlands wants to have a say in Ministry of Education funding

Hastings Highlands wants to make sure it’s involved in how new provincial funding for the local public school board is used.

This comes as the municipality has received a letter from the Ministry of Education saying the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board will be receiving more than $600,000. This is part of the Rural and Northern Education Fund, to be put towards improving the educational experience of students in communities like Hastings Highlands. The ministry’s letter also sets out that the school board is required to publicly report on how the funding will be used.

Councillor Alex Walder has put forward a motion to send a letter to the ministry and the school board, to make them aware the municipality wants to be involved in the process of allocating the funds.

Walder says he is unsure at this time what the money could be used for in Hastings Highlands.

Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board is unable to comment on how the funding will be allocated at this time. Communications Officer Kerry Donnell says more information will be released once it becomes available.
