York River Public School to receive nearly $60,000 in grants

York River Public School is set to receive three grants to add new programs and buy new equipment.

The school is going to receive a $10,000 MusicCounts Band Aid grant thanks to an application made by Teacher Troy Thrower. Principal Marion Wilson says this money will be put towards buying new instruments for the music program.

Wilson says the school could not have afforded new instruments without the grant.

Meanwhile, the school is also going to receive two other grants because of applications made by teachers Sarah Vance and Mary Anne Hicks. One is a $20,000 Experiential Learning grant. Wilson says this will allow students to learn more about the Algonquin community.

Wilson says this will help engage students in Indigenous education while teaching them about other cultures and perspectives.

The school is also set to receive a $28,500 Teacher Learning and Leadership Program grant to bring coding technology into the classroom. Wilson calls this very exciting.

Wilson says this is just another way to add to the programming already offered at the school, and engage students in real-life experience.
