Turtle signs go up to protect the at-risk species

Signs and fences are going up on local highways to help protect turtles in the area.

Think Turtle Conservation Initiative Founder Kelly Wallace says six turtle awareness signs have now gone up along Highway 62 between highways 28 and 7. Wallace says they’re put up near where there have been reports of turtle activity.

Wallace says turtle hot spots were identified and signs were put up thanks to sighting reports from community members.  She says fences are also going up along construction zones on highways 28 and 118 to keep turtles and other forms of wildlife off the road.

With warmer weather, you may notice the reptiles on or near the road more often. If you plan on helping them, Wallace says you need to keep your own safety in mind, along with the safety of your passengers and other drivers on the road.

Wallace recommends using gloves, a blanket, or a towel when handling turtles on the road. She says the goal when helping them cross is to get them and yourself off the road as quickly as possible. If you come across a hurt turtle, you are being urged to report it to the Ontario Turtle Trauma Centre by calling (705) 741-5000.
