OPP Warning of Harsh Penalties for not Obeying School Bus Laws

After a driver used the shoulder to pass a stopped school bus, OPP are warning about the fines you could face.

The incident happened on Highway 28 south yesterday when a school bus stopped to let a student off. The bus put out it’s stop sign, but a driver behind the bus used the shoulder to pass the bus. OPP Constable Philippe Regamey says that could result in a fine up to $485 and three demerit points.

Gord Taylor, the CEO of Tri-Board Transportation, has previously stressed the importance of school bus safety to My Bancroft Now. “It takes a community to keep children safe going to and from school,” Taylor said.

Taylor mentioned that giving yourself extra time in the morning to get out early and avoid busses is important. Regamey agreed saying, “during those times, before and after school, be more patient, watch out for those buses, and make sure you’re driving safe when stop to drop off or pick up kids.”

Regamey says officers are in contact with drivers and continue to monitor what’s going on throughout the school year. He says they’ll set-up cameras, or position officers in certain areas to keep an eye on the bus and other drivers. On top of the up to $485 fine and three demerit points, multiple offences could result in a court date with harsher possible penalties.
