Shoplifting: Business Owners Have To Be on Lookout, Says Bancroft OPP

Shoplifting is on the rise.

Bancroft OPP Detachment Commander, Jeff McKinnon, says that from January to April, there have been 23 thefts under $5000 compared to 8 at this time last year.

McKinnon says that police and business owners have to come together to improve their property security. He adds that everyone can take part by reporting suspicious activity before the theft occurs.

He points out that education plays a big part. He says that teaching staff how to identify a thief can go a long way. “Be looking for it” he says, “most them (staff) know what products they have that are being stolen, they have to keep an eye on those areas and be vigilant” he says.

McKinnon states that police are also conducting foot patrols in businesses who have a high risk of theft so they can help deter thieves.
