Hastings Highlands turtle incident illegal, according to conservation group

After an incident in Hastings Highlands, the Think Turtle Conservation Initiative is reminding people that removing the animals is illegal.

The group got a report of two men parked on a roadside removing a turtle from the side of the road. They ask the community to be on high alert for this type of activity and urge people to identify anyone who disturbs turtles or their eggs.

The Initiative says that under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation act, turtles are considered a species at risk. As a result, removing them or their eggs from the wild is illegal in Ontario. Fines for removing or harming them can come with a fine of $25,000. Buying or selling the animals could result in a fine of $100,000.

If you see illegal activity, the group asks you to call the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry tip line at 1-877-847-7667
