UPDATE: Fatal plane crash being investigated near Maynooth

UPDATE, Tuesday, Oct. 4, 9 a.m.

More details have been released on the plane crash that killed a Hastings Highlands man.

The Transportation Safety Bureau of Canada said the crash happened at 5:45 p.m. Saturday, when a “Superbear” aircraft hit the ground at the end of a private airstrip near Maynooth. 

The pilot, 51-year-old Jason Reynolds, was the sole person aboard. He was pronounced dead after.

An investigation team from the bureau went out Sunday and found the wreckage in a forested area, about 160 metres from the airstrip.

The plane hit large trees before impacting the ground and was destroyed. The team is now examining parts of the aircraft and gathering data.

Monday, Oct. 3, 10 a.m.

A 51-year-old man died in a plane crash near Maynooth on Saturday night.

Police have identified the man as Jason Reynolds of Hastings Highlands.

Police were called to the area at about 9 p.m. They located the pilot and pronounced him dead a short time later.

OPP are investigating the crash, along with the Transportation Safety Board of Canada.

The safety board says the plane involved was an “amateur built” aircraft.

Police were called to the crash site, near Maynooth at about 9 p.m.

A Safety Board spokesperson told Moose FM that it’s common for both OPP and the board to investigate this type of crash. Police are the first responders and if they determine there’s no criminal activity involved, the board will resume the investigation on its own.
