Algonquin groups to recognize Red Dress Day in Bancroft Friday

Many Canadians will be wearing red on Friday, May 5, to mark Red Dress Day, in honour of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women.

That includes people in the Bancroft area.

The Kijicho Manito Madaouskarini Algonquin First Nation and the Algonquin Inodewiziwin Centre are holding a walk and event at Millennium Park.

Participants are asked to gather at the North Hastings Children’s Services Parking lot on Hastings Heritage Way at 9:45 a.m. They’ll start the walk at 10 a.m. and travel to the park, via Station and Hastings streets.

At the park, participants will drum, sing and offer tobacco to water to honour those who have been lost.

Red Shirt Day raises awareness of the fact that a disproportionate number of women in missing and murder cases in Canada are Indigenous.
