OPP warning of “driveway paving scams” targeting eastern Ontario

Police are warning you to be cautious if someone knocks on your door offering to pave or repair your driveway.

Officers from the OPP’s East Region headquarters say “driveway paving scams” have been popping up all over eastern Ontario in recent weeks.

Erin Cranton, the OPP’s East Region Media Coordinator, says these operations have continued despite rules banning door-to-door sales like this in many parts of Ontario.

“Many of the individuals involved in these scams are working without a work permit, have no permanent business address and operate in a fly-by-night manner,” Cranton explains.

Police say the repairs will be done very poorly, and victims won’t be able to get in touch with the company responsible for a refund afterwards.

They say you should avoid agreeing to anything on the spot, do some research before choosing a company to make any repairs to your driveway or home, and make sure to obtain a detailed contract.

If you suspect you’ve been a victim of a scam, you can call the OPP’s non-emergency line or report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
