Drier than normal conditions led to last weeks forest fire in Carlow Mayo

Fire season is early this year, says the Township of Carow Mayo.

On March 13th they shared a screenshot of an active forest fire in the Carlow Mayo region saying it was under control.

We spoke with fire safety officer Alan Musclow:

“We had a fire within the Township, the MNR says it was about .6 of a hectare in size. They deemed the fire under control on March 12th and deemed the fire out on March 13th. This is due to conditions being drier than normal this time of year” Said Musclow.

He also spoke about fire safety for outdoor campfires:

“It’s best to have it in a pit that has non combustible materials such as as raw gravel, sand and have something readily available [for putting out fire] whether it’s a garden hose or a bucket of water. And keep the fire small so that they can maintain control of it at all times”

They also say that failure to report an out of control fire will result in fines.

The township also has a HIZ Self-Assessment which people can use to determine the fire safety level of their home and property:
