Maggie’s Resource Centre is holding their annual Take Back the Night in Bancroft on Thursday.
Executive director Melissa St Pierre said Take Back the Night started in the 1970s in England.
“There was a series of sexual crimes being committed, and instead of making the community safe, women were advised just to stay in, don’t go out alone, so this was kind of a movement to take back the night where everyone could feel safe in the community,” she said.
St Pierre said the event will feature guest speakers, live band performances and a candlelit walk.
She added anyone is welcome at the event and people can bring their pets if they wish.
“In the past, Maggie’s has been tucked away in the corner and not really out there, and I think it’s good to bring awareness to being a safe community as well as Maggie’s being here to support all women in North Hastings,” St Pierre said.
The event is happening this Thursday at Millennium Park, from 5:30 to 8 p.m.
