Bancroft Take Back the Night: ‘No More Silence, No More Violence’

Maggie’s Resource Centre’s Take Back the Night event on Thursday was about breaking silence and reclaiming space.

People gathered at Millennium Park for speeches and a live band performance.

Brittany Brown from the resource centre said a lot of preparation went into the evening.

“I’m looking forward to getting the signs out by the road and getting awareness going on that we need community safety and that everybody needs to take part in minimizing sexual assaults and sexual violence,” she said.

“Hopefully we can get our statistics down to zero and we can do that together as a community.”

The march down to the Madawaska Street traffic light got a number of cheers and honks from cars passing by, and some people even joined along the way.

Kat Ceccotti recently moved to the Bancroft area and attended the event.

“It’s a great organization. I actually just found out about it. I’m really pleased to hear that there’s something like this here in Bancroft, because I understand that this goes on all over the place,” she said.

She said it’s important for women to have somewhere to go.

“I remember many, many years ago, we didn’t have anywhere to go. And you didn’t feel safe.”

The evening ended with a lighting up of the night with tea lights and glow sticks.
