OPP lay over 1,600 traffic charges in eastern Ontario over Thanksgiving

Ontario Provincial Police officers in eastern Ontario laid more than 1,698 charges throughout Operation Impact over the Thanksgiving weekend.

The national education and enforcement campaign targeted impaired, aggressive and distracted driving, use of seat belts and child car seats – the main causes of death and injury on Canadian roads.

Speeding accounted for nearly half of the charges from Friday to Monday, with 982 charges laid, followed by 102 seatbelt violations.

Eighty-three drivers were charged for failing to have proper insurance. Police also wrote up 29 drivers for stunt driving and 27 for distracted driving.

Forty-one drivers were arrested for impaired driving.
