HPEDSB EQAO results show improvements from last year

The Hastings and Prince Edward School Board reports that their students’ most recent EQAO assessments show steady improvements.

The most recent testing was done in spring 2025.

For Grade 3 students, 72 per cent achieved the provincial average for reading, while 58 per cent met the average for writing and 60 per cent reached the average for mathematics.

For Grade 6 students, 82 per cent achieved the provincial average for reading and writing and 46 per cent for mathematics.

Forty-six per cent of Grade 9 students achieved the provincial average for destreamed mathematics.

These areas all show increases in achievement from the previous year, while achievement for the Grade 10 literacy test remained the same.

Education Director Katherine MacIver said she thinks the data shows the board is on the right track in focusing on improving literacy and numeracy skills.

The numbers are slightly lower than the percentage of students who achieved the provincial standard province-wide.

After the EQAO statistics were released last week, the province announced it would be launching a review of its approach to student assessment, noting insufficient progress.

Education Minister Paul Calandra said action is needed to get students back on track.
