HPEDSB hosts student conferences for Words Matter campaign

Students at the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board recently took part in student conferences as part of the Words Matter campaign.

The school board said the conference for students in Bancroft was postponed due to inclement weather, but has been rescheduled for January.

The campaign is in partnership with Harmony Movement.

It is happening throughout the school year and is aimed at teaching students how to recognize and disrupt harmful language.

The campaign encourages students to interrupt when they hear harmful language, explain why the language is harmful, acknowledge the harm that language can cause for people, support those who could have experienced harm and help the person who used the language to learn from the incident.

At the conferences, 500 students between Grades 6 and 12 from across the board came together to learn about identifying inequities and created action plans for change at their own schools.
