HPEDSB and ALCDSB included in latest Fraser Institute rankings

Schools in the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board and the Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board were included in the latest Fraser Institute rankings.

The rankings are based on nine academic indicators derived from provincewide test results.

Birds Creek Public School scored a 4.3 out of 10, while York River Public School scored a 4.1. Maynooth Public School scored a 4.4.

HPEDSB Superintendent of Education for Curriculum Services, Tina Elliott, said the school board assesses student achievement using multiple factors and indicators rather than just standardized test scores and rankings.

She said the board uses observations and assessments done by teachers in the classroom to assess student achievement over time.

This includes identifying areas of success for students to help build momentum, as well as areas of need to ensure the right kind of support.

Elliott said if parents are looking to learn about student achievement, they should contact their child’s school rather than looking at rankings, because school administrators and teachers can take factors like context and demographics into account.

In Bancroft, Our Lady of Mercy got an 8.3 from the Fraser Institute.
